Harmony as a color palette

Name a color, get the changes — chords from the Chord Generator

Ask for a harmonic color — dark and cinematic, warm and open, jazzy and unresolved — and the Chord Generator returns clear piano-and-string voicings you can build songs and cues on. Compare takes by voice-leading smoothness and how the last chord makes you wait for the next.

01

Ask for a color, not a key

Describe the feeling you want the harmony to carry: glassy and suspended, heavy and low, bright with one shadow. Naming the color tells the generator more than a key name ever could.

02

Pick the instrument weight

Solo piano for songwriting clarity, piano with strings for cinematic weight, clean synth pads for modern beds. The instrument changes what the same chords can do.

03

Follow the voice leading

Good changes move the fewest notes the shortest distances. Listen to how each chord hands off to the next — smooth voice leading feels like breathing, clumsy leading feels like jumping.

04

Break the harmony on purpose

Rerun asking for one borrowed chord, a suspended resolution, or a modal shift. One surprising change inside a familiar progression is often the whole song.

How do you prompt the Chord Generator for usable changes?

Color, instrument, and intent: "chords, slow tempo, warm piano with light strings, hopeful but slightly unresolved, ending on a suspended chord, for a film cue." The suspended-ending note gives the generator a destination with tension in it.

What makes one set of chords better than another?

Direction and voice leading. Each change should feel like an answer and a new question, the register should not jump around, and the final chord should match the mood you asked for. If a take sounds random, describe the emotional arc instead of individual chords.
