Set key, length, and cadence habit
Major or minor, four bars or eight, and whether the loop should resolve home or keep circling. Unresolved loops make you write melodies that search; resolving loops make you write ones that land.

Loops that invite melodies — progressions from the Chord Progression Generator
Set the key, the length, and the feel, and the Chord Progression Generator returns four- or eight-bar loops built on piano and pads — writing prompts for melodies, lyrics, and topline ideas. Compare takes by how strongly each loop makes you want to sing over it.
Choose the bed honestly
Piano for emotional clarity, warm pads for atmosphere, strings for weight. Pick the bed you would actually write with, not the most impressive one.
Sing badly over both takes
The test is not listening, it is writing: hum anything over each loop. The progression that pulls a melody out of you is the one to keep, whatever the theory says.
Grow the loop into a song
Rerun asking for a variation for the chorus — higher register, one borrowed chord, a lift. Verse loop plus chorus loop is a song skeleton.
What should a prompt include for the Chord Progression Generator?
Key, mood, and movement: "chord progression, A minor, 96 BPM, 8-bar loop on piano and soft pads, melancholy but forward-moving, resolves every second pass." The resolve note controls whether the loop feels like a verse or a chorus.
How do you judge a generated progression?
By the melodies it invites. Good progressions create expectation at the same spot each loop, leave the top of the register open, and change one thing per cycle. If nothing occurs to you after two loops, generate a different feel rather than forcing it.
