Slower than slowing down

Made to disappear into sleep — tracks from the Sleep Music Generator

Choose the stage — winding down or deep overnight — and the Sleep Music Generator returns quiet, low-contrast tracks where soft pads and gentle piano move too slowly to follow. Compare takes by the drowsiness test and by how cleanly they loop at three in the morning.

01

Pick the stage of night

Wind-down music can still have gentle movement; overnight tracks should be nearly static. Say which one you are making — the difference is whether anything is allowed to happen.

02

Ban the startle

List what must not occur: sudden notes, bright highs, silences that snap you awake. Ask for a consistent low level, warm mids, and fades instead of stops.

03

Run the drowsiness test

Play the take while reading in bed. If you notice the music at minute five, it is too interesting — regenerate with slower changes and lower contrast between elements.

04

Check the loop seam

Sleep tracks play for hours. Loop the take twice and listen to the seam: if the restart wakes your ear, ask for a longer fade-in and out.

What should a sleep music prompt include for the Sleep Music Generator?

Stage and safety: "sleep music, extremely slow, soft warm pads, occasional gentle piano, no sudden changes, no bright frequencies, steady low level, seamless loop." The no-sudden-changes note is the most important line in the prompt.

How is sleep music different from slow ambient music?

Fewer events and no direction. Sleep tracks avoid anything the brain decides to follow — no melodies that develop, no swells that promise. If a take is beautiful but interesting, it is ambient; ask for even less and rerun.
