Choose the form and the tempo

Slow drag around 60-72 BPM, a comfortable shuffle near 80-96, or an uptempo jump past 120 — the form decides the attitude. Name the guitar: hollowbody warmth, stinging single-coil, or slide.

Write in AAB

State a line, repeat it like you mean it, then answer it with a punchline that usually arrives too late. In Own lyrics, keep the first line plain so the rhyme in the third has room to land.

Listen for the conversation

Blues is call and response: the vocal states, the guitar answers, the organ fills the pauses. The right take sounds like three players listening to each other, with the guitar bending into the vowels.

What separates real blues feel from a blues-flavored pop song?

Timing and restraint. The shuffle should lean back, notes should be bent with intent, and the space between phrases should carry as much as the phrases. If the take sounds symmetrical and busy, slow the tempo and ask for sparser phrasing.
